Bali International Airport closed for Nyepi

Those planning to travel to the fabled island of Bali towards the end of March, please note that the entire island will come to a complete standstill for the Balinese New Year of Nyepi which this year falls on Thursday, 7th March 2019. To allow all to follow the prescribed rituals, all traffic all over Bali will come to a complete halt. No planes will be allowed to land or take off for 24 hours. All shops are closed and no one is allowed on the beach or on the streets.

Nyepi is the ritual of the Hindus of Bali to welcome the New Year based on the traditional Saka Calendar. For, contrary to other cultures that celebrate New Year with vivacious festivities, the pinnacle of Balinese New Year is a day of complete Silence. Hence the name Nyepi, meaning “to keep silent” in the local language, which falls on the day following the dark moon of the spring equinox. Nyepi is a day fully dedicated to connect oneself more closely with God (Hyang Widi Wasa) through prayers and at the same time as a day of self introspection to decide on values, such as humanity, love, patience, kindness, and others, that should be kept forever.

As a day reserved for self-reflection anything that may interfere with that purpose is strictly prohibited. Nyepi mandates a day of absolute quiet, based on the four precepts of Catur Brata:
• Amati Geni: Prohibiting the lighting of fires, the use of lighting or satisfying pleasurable human appetites.

• Amati Karya: Prohibiting all forms of physical work other than those dedicated to spiritual cleansing and renewal.

• Amati Lelungan: Prohibiting movement or travel; requiring people to stay within their homes.

• Amati Lelangunan: Prohibiting all forms of entertainment, recreations or general merrymaking.

Ogoh-Ogoh Parade
Ogoh-Ogoh are giant puppets made in the form of mytological Balinese demons. On the eve before Nyepi Day they are paraded on the streets of Bali to purify the island from spritual pollutants and ward off evil spirits. The best spots to view the parade inlud Taamn Satria Gatokaca in Tuban,Bemo Corner in Kuta,,Puputan badung in Denpasar,By pass & Danau Buyan intersection in Snaur,By pass & campus Unud Intersection in Jimbaran and By pass & Gopala inntersection in Nusa Dua.

The sudden silence comes after the eve of noisy festivities on the beaches of Kuta, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Seminyak and others with parades of giant puppets called “ogoh-ogoh” accompanied by clanging gongs and other percussion instruments. At the end of the festival the ogoh-ogoh are torched and are totally engulfed in flames.

Although Nyepi is primarily a Hindu holiday, non-Hindu residents of Bali observe the day of silence as well, out of respect for their fellow citizens. Even tourists are not exempt; although free to do as they wish inside their hotels, no one is allowed on the beaches or streets, and the airport remains closed for the entire day. The only exceptions granted are for emergency vehicles carrying those with life-threatening conditions and women about to give birth. There will be local watchmen known as pecalang to ascertain that this rule is obeyed. At night, all lights will have to be turned off. Hotels will close all curtains that no ray of light shines to the outside. All sound and music indoors should be held to its lowest volume.

Rice Paddy

Rice is very important aspect of Balinese life, dominating not only the country side with its luminous green terraced fields but also the relegion and culture of Bali.It is the major crop and also the main diet of the Balinese people. In the history of pre-mechanized agriculture few societies have ever achieved the high levels of productivity characterized by wet rice farming in Bali.It appears that four factors are central to their succes as rice farmers.

These include :

  • The fertility of the volcanic soil
  • A high complex techology and corresponding knowledge which allows the balinese to make maximal use of environmental systems and resourse.
  • An organizational system (subak) capable of co-coordinating use of man Power and resourse.
  • A genetic strains of rice selected over thousands of years for their diseases Resistance, productivity and beauty.

About The Rice
Rice cultivation has shaped the social landscape-the intricate organization necessary fro growing rice is a large factor in the strength of Bali's community life.Rice cultivation has also changed the environmental landscape-terraced rice fields trip down hillsides like steps for a giant,in the shade of gold, browm and green.

There are four words for rice namely"

  • Padi is the growing rice plant (hence paddy fields )
  • Gabah is rice after harvesting
  • Beras is uncoooked grain
  • Nasi is cooked rice
  • As in nasi goreng( fried rice ) and nasi putih(plain rice).A rice fields is called sawah. The whole rice field has a farmer organization called "Subak"

The Subak as an organization of the farmers wet rice agriculture, especially as practiced in bali,is far too complex and requires too much regulations, particularly in coordinating use of irrigation systems, for one farmer to practice alone or even in conjunction with a few others.Consequently,a highly specialized farm of agricultural association has evolved over the centuries in Bali to coordinate the maximal usage of the environment for the growing of the wet rice. These irrigation cooperative, known as "Subak " are responsible fro the allocation of water resoureces and maintenance of irrigation networks, for coordinating planting, and for insuring that all religious rituals to insure good harvests are performed.

Subak organization areusually comprised of all individuals owning land irrigated by a singles dam and major canal
The Process of Growing the Rice. The water from  a single subak dam may be divided into dozens and even hundreds of channels to irrigate to terraced sawah. In determining the many issues involved in wet rice cultivation ( when to plant, who is responsible fro cleaning and guarding canals, regulation water flew, etc)gropu votes are taken. Each subak members has one vote regardless of the size of his holding.Generally, all Subak leaders are elected by group decesion. Thus, for the entire peasant farmer's expertise in using  his environment fro wet rice, withour the subak to coordinate activities its unlikely that the Sawah Sytem could ever reached its current level of pervasiveness efficiency and productivity.
Subak in bali doest not belong to the Banjar and has its own leader .The people who become the Subak members are not always the same people who become the Banjar members. The Subak members are the owners or the people who work on the rice field that getting the water irrigation from the dams regulated by a subak organization. Not all the subak members live in the same Banjar. On the hand, there could be a Banjar member who has many rice fields in different areas and get the water irrigation from the dams organized by several Subaks. Therefore this Banjar member will join himselfin all of the Subak where his rice fields are located.

Subak irrigation system beside as an appropriate technological system, but as a cultural system as well. This phenomenin indicate thar basically subak irrigation.

Planting of the Seeds
Bundles of the rice shoots over then brought from adjacent nurseries where the seed has been sproutd.Without the aid of strings or measuring devices each sedling is precisely placed next to its neighbors, neither too close nor too distant.

History of the Traditional Rice Field
Wet rice agriculture (Sawah )in the nexus of Balinese low-land economy. This is hardy a new development.Wet rice (Huma) is mentioned in teh earliest knowm old Balinese inscription (prasasti) dated 882AD.It seem quite likely that the origin of "sawah "cultibation on Bali dates back to the beginning of the first millennium or earlier. The development of the wet rice agriculture was fostered by the abundance of water and fertile oil,and this fertility of the land has long been evoked as an explanation for Bali proddigious fields.Still, even the most fertile fields would have been exhausted after hunderss of years of used bad it not been for the Balinese farmer's ability to prepare and replenish the nutrients of the soil.

Description of wet rice farming preparatin of the soil;
Traditional fertilizer relies primarily on ash decaying organic matters, and cow manure.Peasant families have traditionally own one or more cows fro fertilizer production. The preparation of the soil is crucial in traditional methods of wet rice agriculture. After each harvest unusable matter in teh fields in burnt to provive ash, after which the field are hoed. They are then flooded;cow manure is spread over the fields, after which they are  ploughhed several times. The soil is tehn worked into a fine, smooth mud, being leveled by dragging a heavy wooden bar pulled by a cow or buffalo across teh fields.

The Growth Period
The fields are carefully weeded in teh first few weeks and throughout the growth of the crop the rice's water supply is carefully regulated according to the plant's needs. The plant are also periodically inspected for insects and other pests which,if found, are quickly dealt with .During the first momth or so of growth the fields.
As the rice begins to develop heads of grain the farmer construct elaborate systems toward of the bird.Scarecrows, bamboo poles,wind-driver noise makers, flag and streamers are used to this end.As the crop ripend the farmers guards their fields around the clock to protect them from birds during the day and field mice at night.

Harvesting
The crop is harvested with the help of friends, relatives or the harvetsing association known as "seka manyi".During the rice harvest a line if harvesters will work their way across the field cutting insures a minimal amount of loss during harvest.Once all the rice is cut it is gathered into bundles, which are then carried to the farmers rice barn where it can be kept in bundles for yeras without spoilage. The bundles can be removed, threshed and hulled as needed for family consumption,or sold in the market when cash or other goods are required.

The Process of Growing the Rice
The process of the rice growing starts with the bare, dry and harvested fields. The remaining rice stalks are burnt off and the field is then liberally soaked and repeatedly ploughed.Nowadays this may be done with a mechanical,petrol-power cultivated, but often they will still use two bullocks or cattle pulling a wooden plough.Once the field is reduced to the required muddy consistency,a small corner of the field is walled off and the seedling rice is planted there. The rice is grown to a reasonable size and lifted and replanted, shoot by shoot,in the large fields have to kept in a working order and the fields have to be weeded.

Tuak is Traditional Balinese Drink

Tuak is a Balinese traditional beverage which contains about 5% alcohol. It is a milky looking liquid with a sweet-sourish taste made from the juice/sap of various trees including coconut and palm.

A true Tuak experience will have you sitting on the ground, in a group circle, with just one cup being refilled and passed around the group. One person will have the responsibility of being the groups bartender until the tuaks all finished.

Tuak ferments extremely quickly and if not consumed on the day of production it begins to turn into vinegar and is most revolting. A tuak fart can be rather thick and odorous and cause for much celebration and laughing for the offender. On the flipside it can be be the cause of many green sickly looking friends who were unlucky enough to be around for the event.

Based on the level of alcohol, Tuak is classified as Tuak Manis and Tuak Semedah. Tuak Manis is sweeter and contains lower alcohol.

Due to its short life span you are unlikely to come across unless in the villages away from Denpasar. The best quality Tuak is produced in the East (Karangasem) and North (Buleleng) of Bali.

Bali Topography

Topography of Bali.
Bali is noted for the great beauty of its landscape, from coastal lowland to exhilarating high moutain lake s,barren limestone plateaus to thick monsoon forest.Hills and mountains are everywhere and the surface of the island is scored by fast-flowing rivers, deep ravines, rugged saddles, and alluvial slopes covered in rich volcanic assh.Except for the coastalplains, there are few flat areas.A west-to east volcanic chain( an extension of Java's central range )divides the island in half.Crater lakes are found at Batur and Bratan,Buyan and Tamblingan in the rich submontane rainforest area around Bedugul.Bali's mountains, floating among the clouds and covered in tall forest, stand in contrast to the wild and rugged beauty of the volcanic craters, some of which are still active.

The south-central plains are intensively cultivated.Terrace rice fields dominate the landscape-myriad small rectangles of still water mirroring the cloids. As you leave the heavily farmed southern plains and head north, the landscape change from cascadeof rice fields to gardens of onions, cabbages and papayas thriving in the cooler climate.Thatched-palm huts change to sturdy cottages made of wood, tile and stone, built to withstand the heavy rains.

In the alphine highlands of Bali are mountain stream, prehistoric tree-ferns,wildflowers,creepers,orchid,leeches,butterflies,bird,and screaming monkeys, while tall pines and cypress soar high above the mountain village of Bedugul,Kintamani, and Penelokan. The island's far western region, known as Pulaki,is an unspoiled, under populated marine and forest wilderness.Legend has it Bali's first peple had their origins here in a lost, invisible city.In the far north is a sharp drop from the mountain to a narrow strip of fertile of the coastal plain around Singaraja. The lowland coastal fringeof the north is narrow, and the absence of rivers makes the land dry and less suitable for intensive rice cultivation. In contrast to the southern coast, the water off the calm north shore is shallow for up to a kilometer out to sea.The palm savannahs, tall grasses, and clusters of pilang ( Acacia leucophloea )tree give the Prapat Agung peninsula of the far northwest a distinctly African apperance.

The length of Bali's costline is 460km.Only about eight percen of the beaches consist of white sand, and the are founf mostly in the famed resorts of Sanir,Kuta,Uluwatu,Nusa Dua and Tanjung.the remainder of the beaches, such as a magnificent 30-kilometer-long stretch in Tabanan Regency, feature gray-black volcani couscous-like sand and are almost desrt-like being on another planet. The coast from snur extending down through Benoa Bay is long and sheltered, lined with 1,400 hectares of natural mangrove stands suffered from the effects of salt making, shrimp ponds, coral collecting, and the charcoal industry,a major reforestation project has been underway along this coastal strip since 1992.

Bali's six volcanic pekas, all exceeding 2,000 meters, trap rain clouds that swell the rivers rushing down from the highlands through deep, narrow gorges overgrown with lush tropical vegetation,Running parallel to each other north to south, irrigating the rice fields on the lower slopes, are bali's two major rivers, the Pakerisan("Kris RIver')and the Petanu ("Cursed River"),their history steeped in myths and legends. Both are regarded as holy;it is on their banks where most of the archaeological remains of Bali's ancient kingdoms have been found.

The astonishingly rich coastal plains of the south have given rise to Bali's unique civilization.Until recent times, the entire southern drainage of the island has been politically divided into eight small but powerful kingdoms. These partitioned,pie-shaped realms of south Bali were always aligned north to south along the ravines rather than east to west and travel on Bali has always been hampered by deeply cut longitudinal ravines.Even today, because of the island's difficult topography, most higways carry traffic north and south.

Bali lies over two major tectonic plate-the rigid Sunda plate to the north and the Indo-Australia plate to the south-the grind over one another, producing frequent geologic insability. One of the worst natural catastrophes of this century wa the 1917 eartquake in which a series of tremors devastated the eastern and southerb regions of the islad, followed by a major eruption of Gunung Batur when tremors came to an end,1,500 people had died and 2,431 temples and 64,000 home had been destroyed.Another extermely destructive eruption of 1,717 meter-high Batur occured. In August 1994,after lying dormant fro 20 years, the volcano began to erupt again, venting more tah 600 times a day and shooting hot ashes and smoke into the sky for month. Bali has highest and most revered mountain,GUnung Agung, also erupted in 1963,destrying vilages and covering fertile rice fields with rivers of lave and showers of ash and debris.

Note :
Which GedeGede is a very common name in Bali because the first son in each family is always called Gede.  No wonder if you search the internet and you type in

‘Gede’ then thousands of names will appear. It is so confusing and you will ask “Which one is the Gede I want to contact?" This is specially so when a family
member or friend recommends you contact ‘Gede’ as your driver for your holiday in Bali.

I am Gede not ‘Lucky’ and it is with this name that I have built a good professional reputation as 'Bali Driver Gede’ for year after year…over twenty years.

Uluwatu Temple

It’s located on the very steep valley on the west of Pecatu  village,in the district of Kuta,Badung Regency, about 30 km from Denpasar.

Uluwatu temple perches on the south-western tip of peninsula, where sheer cliffs drop precipitously into the clear blue sea.The temple hangs right over the edge, you enter it through an unusual  arched gateway flanked by statue of Ganesha.Inside, the walls of coral bricks are covered  with intricate carving of Bali’s mythological menageries. But the real attraction is the location for a good angel, especially at sunset, walk around the cliff to the left(south) of the temple. Watch out for the local monkeys, which for some reason like to snatch spectacles and sunglasses,as well ad handbags, hats and anything else they can get.

Uluwatu is one of  the several important temple to the spirits of the sea to be found along the southern coast of Bali.Way back to 11th century the Javanese priest Empu Kuturan first established a temple here. The temple was add by Nirartha, another Javenese priest who is known for seafront temples, like Tanah lot,Rambut Siwi and Pura Sakenan.Nirarthe retreated to Uluwatu for his final days, when he attained Moksa,or freedom from earthly desire
